Hugh L Carey Tunnel Ventilation Building is part of the Brooklyn–Battery Tunnel, officially known as the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, named after the governor of New York in the 1970s. It passes the East River and connects the southern tip of Manhattan to the neighborhood of Red Hook in Brooklyn. Although plans for the tunnel date back to the 1920s, the tunnel did not open until May 25, 1950. Construction on the ventilation building on Manhattan started in January 1949. The tunnel has a total of four ventilation buildings: two in Manhattan, one in Brooklyn, and one on Governors Island.
