The building was originally a railway station. It was built between 1898 and 1900. The station ceased to operate in 1939. In 1970, permission was granted to demolish the station but Jacques Duhamel, Minister for Cultural Affairs, ruled against plans to build a new hotel in its stead.The hotel was closed in 1973. Now it is the Musée d'Orsay. The museum was opened in 1986.
