Battery Leary - Merriam was constructed during the years 1916-1919. It was a part of Fort MacArthur. The battery became operational until 1944, when it was deactivated. It was equipped with two 14" guns. Battery Leary is named for Brigadier General Peter Leary Jr. Battery Merriam is named for Major General Henry Clay Merriam. The living history crew of Fort MacArthur Museum is offering an opportunity to see and tour parts of the fort that are normally inaccessible to the public.
