Washington Square Park has served various roles throughout the years. It has been an cemetery, a parade ground, a spot visited by chess enthusiasts and a playground. A young Stanley Kubrick was one of the frequent chess players. The park is well-known for its arch, honoring George Washington. The Arch, designed by the New York architect Stanford White and erected in 1892, was modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. But the square is also famous for its fountain. The first fountain next to the arch was completed in 1852 and replaced in 1872.
