The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York, also known as The Met, is the largest art museum in the United States. It attracts more than 7 million visitors per year. In 2016 it was the third most visited art museum in the world. The main building is on the eastern edge of Central Park. The Met was founded in 1870 for the purposes of opening a museum to bring art and art education to the American people. It opened on February 20, 1872. The entrance of the New York Public Library was used because the MET did not want to be associated with a robbery of this kind.
