Robben Island is an island in Table Bay, 6.9 kilometres (4.3 mi) of the coast of Cape Town. Since the end of the 17th century, Robben Island has been used for the isolation of mainly political prisoners. Nelson Mandela was imprisoned on Robben Island. The Island is accessible to visitors through tours that depart from Cape Town's waterfront. Tours depart three times a day and take about 3.5 hours.
