The City of Fairhope was founded in 1894 as a utopian single tax colony. It was established by the "Fairhope Industrial Association" on the site of the former City of Alabama. Since it was a model community based on the common ownership of land, and was created with a "fair hope of success," it was christened "Fairhope" by the Midwesterners. The School for Organic Education was established in the city in 1907 by educator Marietta Johnson. Fairhope was incorporated in 1908. In the early 1900s, the city became a popular wintering spot for intellectuals and artists. Fairhope, Alabama, in Baldwin county, is 14 miles SE of Mobile, Alabama (center to center) and 135 miles E of New Orleans, Louisiana.
