Davis–Monthan Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base 5 miles (8 km) south-southeast of downtown Tucson, Arizona. Davis-Monthan AFB's role in the storage of military aircraft began after World War II, and continues today. It has evolved into the largest aircraft boneyard in the world. Tucson's dry climate and alkali soil made it an ideal location for aircraft storage and preservation.
