Cragside is an extraordinary Victorian house near the town of Rothbury. The original building consisted of a small shooting lodge which was built between 1862 and 1864. In 1869, the architect Richard Norman Shaw was asked to enlarge the site. Cragside was the home of William Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong, founder of the Armstrong Whitworth armaments firm. He was an industrial magnate, scientist, philanthropist and inventor who lived in the 19th century and died in 1900. The house was used only for exterior shots. It was selected as location because it is surrounded by tall pine trees which look like those in northern California. All the footage was gathered in just two days of filming. The action on the roof with the glass ceiling was filmed in Pinewood Studios, just like all the interior shots.
