Albert I, Prince of Monaco acquired the piece of land that would become the Exotic Garden of Monaco - in French; Jardin Exotique de Monaco - in 1912. He gave Louis Notari, the Chief Engineer of Monaco, the assignment to build a garden. Notari discovered the grotto which became an important part of the garden in 1916. The garden was finished in 1933. The grotto was not opened to the public until 1950. It can only be visited with specialized guides.
