The Arecibo Observatory is a radio telescope in Puerto Rico. The formal name of the observatory was the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center (NAIC). The radio telescope was the world's largest single-aperture telescope from 1963 until July 2016. The observatory was damaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017 and was affected by earthquakes in 2019 and 2020. On November 19, 2020 the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center (NAIC) said it would decommission the observatory, ending the Observatory's 57-year mission.
