The hotel started in 1912 after the construction had started in 1909. The hotel was conceived by Charles Mewes, author of several Ritz hotels in Europe. In the 1950s a new wing was added to the building, which became U-shaped instead of the original L-shape. The hotel is the main accommodation for the stars who attend the San Sebastián International Film Festival.
