Originally the square was occupied by several houses, chapels and the Archbishop’s Palace. The Palace was destroyed in 1831 by rioters. In 1843, the site was opened as a formal garden. At that time it was the first public district garden in Paris. The Virgin Fountain - which was build in the neo-Gothic style - was designed in 1845 by architect Alphonse Vigoureux and sculptor Merlieux. Following a serious fire on April 15, 2019 at the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, Square Jean XXIII is closed until further notice.
