The Brown Mansion is also known as the Villere Mansion or the Brown-Villere Mansion. Businessman W.P. Brown promised his bride that he would build the most palatial home New Orleans had ever seen. Craftsmen were imported from all over the world. The home was begun in 1901 and finished in 1904. With nine bedrooms and approximately 22,000 square feet on four levels, the mansion is described in some guidebooks as the largest on St. Charles Avenue.
