The Aero Theatre in Santa Monica was built in 1939 by aviation pioneer Donald W. Douglas. It opened its doors in 1940. It functioned as a cinema for the employees of the Douglas Aircraft Company. Hard times came in the 1990’s. Robert Redford tries to buy the theater for Sundance Cinemas in 2001. Two years later the theater closed. In 2005 it reopened thanks to the nonprofit organization American Cinematheque.
