3,015 acres of land surrounding the observatory was donated to Los Angeles by Griffith J. Griffith in 1896. In his will Griffith donated funds to build an observatory, exhibit hall, and planetarium on the donated land. His objective was to make astronomy accessible by the public. Construction began on June 20, 1933. The observatory opened on May 14, 1935. Visitors can look through telescopes, explore exhibits and enjoy spectacular views of Los Angeles and the Hollywood Sign.
