The Skinny Bridge - or the Magere Brug as the Dutch calll it - is a double drawbridge in Amsterdam-Centre across the river Amstel. The present bridge was built in 1934. The first bridge at this site was built in 1691 as Kerkstraatbrug and had 13 arches. Because this bridge was very narrow, the locals called it Skinny Bridge. There is also a local legend that the bridge was named after two skinny sisters. These two well-off sisters lived on opposite sides of the river. They are said to have had the wooden bridge built to make it easier to visit one another. The current bridge was designed by architect Piet Kramer although it took some time before his design was realized. The last major renovation was in 1969. Until 1994, the bridge was opened by hand, but is now operated automatically.
