Almeria is a city in Andalusia, Spain. The Alcazaba was founded by Abd al-Rahman III who also gave the city its name: al-Mariyyah or the watchtower. In the 10th and 11th centuries, it was part of the Caliphate of Córdoba. It grew wealthy on trade and the textile industry, especially Almerían silk. After many battles it became Christian in 1489. In 1522, Almería was devastated by an earthquake. It was not until the 19th century that the city was really rebuild.
