The Bemelmans Bar is decorated with murals painted by Ludwig Bemelmans. They depict Madeline in Central Park. The bar is the only place where you can see the work of Bemelmans in public. Instead of accepting payment for his work, Bemelmans received a year and a half of accommodations at the Carlyle Hotel for himself and his family. The bar is located on the ground level of the Carlyle Hotel which is a luxury residential hotel located on the Upper East Side of New York City. The hotel was opened in 1930. It was designed in Art Deco style and was named after Scottish essayist Thomas Carlyle.
