Astor Place is a one-block street in the lower part of Manhattan in the East Village, in NoHo (North of Houston Street). Astor Place was once known as Art Street. But it was named for John Jacob Astor - at one time the richest person in the United States - soon after his death in 1848. A 21 million dollar reconstruction to implement a redesign of Astor Place began in 2013 and was completed in 2016. The entrance leads to line 6 of the New York Subway. The station is is on the List of Registered Historic Places in New York.
