Thompson Springs, for a time officially also known as just Thompson, is a very small town in Grand County, Utah. In 2010 - at the time of the census - only 39 people lived there. Thompson Springs was named for E.W. Thompson, who lived near the springs and operated a sawmill to the north near the Book Cliffs. The town began life in the late nineteenth century as a station stop on the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. Construction of I-70 south of Thompson Springs drew traffic away from the city. The exact GPS location is not know yet, but filming took place on this road. Mr. Locations has quite an impressive overview of many locations from the movie: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mrlocation/albums/72157632014009525

Whilst on a short weekend getaway, Louise shoots a man who had tried to rape Thelma. Due to the incriminating circumstances, they make a run for it and thus a cross country chase ensues for the two fugitives. Along the way, both women rediscover the strength of their friendship and surprising aspects of their personalities and self-strengths in the trying times.
