Myrtle Hill Cemetery is the second oldest cemetery in the city of Rome, Georgia. The historic cemetery has become the location where more than 20,000 Romans found their final resting place since 1857. Myrtle Hill Cemetery is located on one of Rome’s seven hills and is situated on six terraces. Before becoming a cemetery, the hill gained notability as the site of an 18th-century battle also know as the Battle of Hightower. In September 1793, General John Sevier, in command of 800 men, was pursuing 1,000 Cherokees who had killed thirteen settlers at Cavett's Station, near Knoxville. The pursuit ended in Georgia, when Sevier caught up with the Cherokee at the village of what he called Hightower, which is near the present-day site of Cartersville, Georgia. The Cherokee created a defensive position on Myrtle Hill. Sevier left a written account of the battle.
