The museum is housed in the former Gare d'Orsay, a railway station built between 1898 and 1900. The station was deigned by three architects: Lucien Magne, Émile Bénard and Victor Laloux. The idea to make a museum of the former station was made in 1974. But the museum was not officially opened until December 1986 by then-president François Mitterrand. The current museum holds mainly French art dating from 1848 to 1914.
