The museum is housed in the former Gare d'Orsay, a railway station built between 1898 and 1900. The station was deigned by three architects: Lucien Magne, Émile Bénard and Victor Laloux. The idea to make a museum of the former station was made in 1974. But the museum was not officially opened until December 1986 by then-president François Mitterrand. The current museum holds mainly French art dating from 1848 to 1914. There are two big clocks on the main façade of Musée d'Orsay. You can see of them inside the building. Looking through the clock, you can see some buildings on the other side of the Seine. The museum was built in 1900. At first the Musée d’Orsay was a train station, the Gare d’Orsay. The clock is actually a reminder from the train station.
