It was on this spot that the first bridge of Paris, called the Grand-Pont, crossed the Seine. A bridge has existed there since at least the pre-Roman tribal era. here was a time houses were built on the bridge. at one time withere were sixty houses on top of it. The bridge has been destroyed and reconstructed numerous times. A metal version of the bridge was inaugurated in 1919 by Raymond Poincaré, President of the French Republic.
