The Woolworth Building is a skyscraper in New York City designed by architect Cass Gilbert in the neo-Gothic style. It has a height of 792 feet (241 m). It was the tallest building in the world from 1913 to 1930. It is named after F. W. Woolworth, the founder of a brand of popular five-and-ten-cent stores. The building was conceived as the headquarters for his company. Construction of the Woolworth Building started in 1910. It was completed two years later, but it was not until April 24, 1913 that the building was officially opened. The Woolworth Building has been a National Historic Landmark since 1966,[and a New York City designated landmark since 1983.
