Hoyt-Schermerhorn Streets is an express station of the New York City Subway. Construction of the station began around 1929, and it was opened to service on April 9, 1936. The station featured in different movies and series including The Wiz, Coming to America, The Warrior and the 2009 version of The Taking of Pelham 123. Following the death of Michael Jackson in 2009, New York City Council member Letitia James advocated renaming the station in Jackson's honor. Jackson filmed the videoclip for "Bad" at the station. The clip was directed by Martin Scorsese. James's proposal was met with resistance. Other proposals to honor Michael Jackson were also denied.
