The monument, column is of the Tuscan order, was made in honor of Prince Frederick, Duke of York (1763-1827), the second eldest son of King George III. It was designed by Benjamin Dean Wyatt. It is built of granite from Aberdeenshire and its 13 ft 6 in (4.11 m) tall. Inside the hollow column a spiral staircase of 168 steps, but the staircase is closed to the public.
