The Chicago Cultural Center opened in 1897. It was converted to an arts and culture center in 1977. The building was designed for the city's central library, a meeting hall and memorial for the Grand Army of the Republic in 1892 by by Boston architectural firm Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge. It is one of Chicago’s most popular attractions and is considered one of the most comprehensive arts showcases in the United States.
