The town centre of Pienza has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1996. It was the birthplace of the 15th century pope Pius II (1458-1464). At that time it was called Corsignano. When the pope came to power, he decided to rebuild his native village according to the urban planning ideals of the time. The production team added the fountain in front of Pienza Cathedral (Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta) just for the scene.
