The Scuola vecchia della Misericordia is a former charity building. The Scuola was built in 1310 and subsequently expanded several times. This location was only used for the interior shots, the exterior was shot at Fondaco dei Turchi in Venice.
The decorators and set builders had four weeks of work with twenty craftsmen to build the set in the Scuola Grande Della Misericordia. For example, the balcony used by Paul Bettany to observe the events was built from the ground up, as was the grandstand for the orchestra. The newly added elements of the interior were painted to resemble the marble.
