The Boboli Gardens are located behind Palazzo Pitti and were laid out in the 16th century for Eleanor of Toledo, wife of Cosimo I de' Medici. Grotta del Buontalenti is located in the far north of the Boboli Gardens alongside the entrance to the Vasari Corridor.
The Vasari Corridor is the secret passageway commissioned by Giorgio Vasari from Cosimo dei Medici to provide a direct route from Palazzo Vecchio to the residence of Palazzo Pitti without danger along the streets. A small exit door is located near the Grotto del Buontalenti, but the corridor, of course, runs all the way through and ends in the Palazzo Pitti.
