SCENE
A very weak Sophie goes to the library to look for the work by the poet Emile Dickens. She faints after she is made clear that Charles Dickens was an British writer. The librarian however does not understand Sophie was looking for the poems by Emily Dickinson. Nathan comes and helps her.

The Gould Memorial Library is a building on the campus of the Bronx Community College (BCC), an institution of the City University of New York. The building was designed by Stanford White of the firm McKim, Mead & White. Constructed between 1895 and 1900 as the central library of New York University’s Bronx campus. The library is named after railroad magnate Jay Gould, whose daughter Helen Miller Shepard funded the project in his memory. Gould is no longer used as a library, instead serving primarily as an event space. The Gould Memorial Library is surrounded by the Hall of Fame for Great Americans. The dome of the central rotunda, or main reading room, has a deeply coffered ceiling. Around the drum of the dome are the words of Job 28: “Where shall wisdom be found? Where is the place of understanding?”

SYNOPSIS
Stingo, a young writer, moves to Brooklyn in 1947 to begin work on his first novel. As he becomes friendly with Sophie and her lover Nathan, he learns that she is a Holocaust survivor. Flashbacks reveal her harrowing story, from pre-war prosperity to Auschwitz. In the present, Sophie and Nathan's relationship increasingly unravels as Stingo grows closer to Sophie and Nathan's fragile mental state becomes ever more apparent.
