For the interview from the opening scene the team used Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, where the film was also screened during the film festival. But those were more establishing shots of the room that were used as a background. The stage of the interview was built in a studio. "We had a very short plate shoot, which is basically when you take a picture of a location and then reuse it later as a background or as a part of the composition of the image—you’re basically layering. It’s like Photoshop, you’re filming a person in front of a green screen in Berlin and then layering in the plate behind it as a background. So the film starts in New York, it starts at Lincoln Center at the very iconic Alice Tully Hall for a The New Yorker festival conversation. So, to shoot that, we had to create this feeling that there was lots of space around [Blanchett and moderator Adam Gopnik] and use in our smaller set lots of wooden surfaces like they have there." (Production designer Marco Bittner Rosser) Alice Tully Hall is a concert hall at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. The hall is named for Alice Tully, a New York performer and philanthropist whose donations assisted in the construction of the hall. It was designed by architect Pietro Belluschi as part of the Juilliard Building. It was completed and subsequently opened in 1969.
