The big building had three large open areas next to each other, surrounded by buildings used for farming, housing about a hundred workers, and other activities that could ensure the self-sufficiency of the complex. Construction began in 1820, starting at the central courtyard but in 1834 construction was halted and never resumed In 1975, the vast complex, which had long been under the ownership of the Bossi Bocchi family, was selected as the filming location for Bernardo Bertolucci's "Novecento." The director spent over a year there in 1979, returning once again to shoot scenes for "La Luna." Around the turn of the millennium, efforts were made to partially restore the grand courtyard, utilizing a portion of it for farming purposes and agritourism, offering overnight accommodations as well.
