This scene was significantly shortened from its original concept. Lawrence Kasdan's script initially included a prolonged fight where Indy would showcase his bullwhip skills. A humorous moment was planned where the swordsman accidentally slices through a tough piece of meat from a market stall, prompting a grateful vendor to thank him. However, due to Harrison Ford and much of the crew suffering from dysentery, Ford suggested they "just shoot the sucker." Director Steven Spielberg agreed, leading to the biggest laugh of the film and one of its most memorable scenes.
