Roosevelt Island, formerly known as Welfare Island and Blackwell's Island, is a small island in the East River in New York City. It is is approximately 3 kilometers long and a maximum of 240 meters wide. The island is accessible via the Roosevelt Island Bridge, Roosevelt Island subway station and the Roosevelt Island Tramway, a gondola lift that connects the island to Manhattan at the Queensboro Bridge.

Ingrid and Martha were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter, and they were separated by the circumstances of life.
