Alcatraz Island is located in San Francisco Bay, 1.25 miles (2.01 km) from the shore of San Francisco. Alcatraz Island is home to the abandoned prison, the site of the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States and early military fortifications. The jail held famous criminals such as Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud also known as the Birdman of Alcatraz. A total of 36 prisoners made 14 escape attempts. On June 11, 1962, Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin carried out one of the most famous escapes ever devised. It was Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy who ordered the penitentiary to be closed on March 21, 1963.
