The Priory Church of Saint Bartholomew the Great is London's oldest surviving church. Founded in 1123 as an Augustinian Priory, it has been in continuous use since 1143.
St Bartholomew the Great, Smithfield, is hidden away behind its gatehouse. Entrance around 57A West Smitfield. Tube: Farringdon or Barbican, Circle Line. She is beheaded, ascending the block in a blood-red dress, red being the Catholic liturgical color for martyrs. Smithfield is the loation where the real William Wallace (played by Mel Gibson in Braveheart) was hung, drawn and quartered.
