Campo Santa Maria Formosa is a city square in the Castello district. Santa Maria Formosa church was built in 1492 to a design by Renaissance architect Mauro Codussi. It stands on the site of an earlier church from the 7th century. The name formosa refers to an alleged appearance of the Virgin disguised as a voluptuous woman.
